The Modern Book Depot

One of the best book stores in Guwahati, it has a range of books on English literature as well as other literature translated into English. Whenever I want a new book, I would come here to buy. The owner very polite and friendly. And has considerable amount of knowledge on various literature.

Their attitude to help you find out the book you're looking for make this place most attractive. Although the books arrangement isn't systematic and proper but their collection is awesome. Do not ask for latest publishing books. Otherwise they have a make genre. Uncle on the counter (may be the owner) is friendly and helpful.

Used to visit this place quite often during my college days. Though the collection is quite good but the owner is very rude. As my exams were over and I didn't have much to do, I happened to visit the shop and coincidentally it was 2 days in a row. The owner was going to his office and he asked me to either buy a book or get out and went on to ask the cashier to keep a look out as he thought I am a thief standing just behind my back. Never visited again. Was crossing Pan Bazar last week, and saw that the bookstore hasn't fared well in the past couple of years. The collection that is said to be new additions according to the white board they have at front isn't new anymore but many months have passed since those books were released. The lights are dim and the shelves looked uncared for. Even though I dislike the owner but I would never wish this for any bookstore. We need to visit bookstores more so that they can sustain themselves.

The worst book store EVER!! THE old lady is a very rude and thorough asshat. She judges people by THEIR clothes and school/college uniforms!! If you're dressed in private school uniform or branded clothes, you'll be treated nicely. If you wear old, simple clothes or a govt school/college uniform, you'll get a nasty experience. I'll never forget and forgive how she treated my dear uncle and friend. Regret spending money there.

The Modern Book Depot fails terribly at giving a physical bookstore experience. An in-person visit to a shop must allow us to browse their shelves at leisure. I found myself today here, not with any titles in mind. I was met with a very cross person, who I'm guessing is the owner. They were scolding someone who probably works at the place. They proceeded to ask me what I want, to which I replied that I was only looking. When I reached their very back stacks they told me not to touch anything and that I wasn't allowed to keep lounging around anyway. Either I was to ask for what I want specifically or - they didn't say the rest but safe to say they meant I wasn't welcome. Guwahati has a dying book culture. We dearly need warm and welcoming bookstores, like Faqir Chand or Bahrisons of Delhi. Ill-tempered and disrespectful people in a place which is supposed to be a haven for readers feels sacrilegious. Pathetic.

One of the best bookstores in Assam. One can find almost any genre of books he or she wants , it stocks a myraid variety of books ranging from sci-fiction like themaze runner( which I bought today and totally satisfied with my purchase) to non fiction like Ripley's Bion. Morever the lady at the Counter is very informative. I highly recommend everyone to Visit this store and take a look at the books at this place......

One of the few places in Guwahati that offers a good collection of fiction and non fiction books of general interest apart from text books. The place has been around for ages and despite the onslaught of online retail, modern book depot has been able to hold its own

Everything good except the size of the room. Otherwise it is eligible for 5star rating. Good location and very good service. Very near to khalighat kalika Devi mandir Birla mandir Victoria Mahal etc.
