Was spending some time in Guwahati and wanted to go to Kaziranga but friends said to check out Pobitora and recommended the elephant safari over the jeep one since it was closer and easier to do on a short time constraint. So I booked the safari online they had two early morning slots. I really enjoyed watching the Rhinos from atop elephants. It was a surreal experience that I doubt will be this accessible in a few years.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is one of those places that truly makes you feel connected to nature. Located just a short drive from Guwahati, it’s often called the “Mini Kaziranga,” and after visiting, I completely understand why.The main attraction here is the one-horned rhinoceros, and Pobitora has one of the highest rhino densities in the world. During the jeep safari, I got to see rhinos from a surprisingly close distance—peacefully grazing in the grasslands. It was an experience that felt both thrilling and calming at the same time. The sanctuary is beautifully maintained, with large stretches of wetlands, grasslands, and patches of forest. The birdlife is another highlight—if you love birds, this place is heaven. I spotted several migratory birds, egrets, storks, and even some colorful local species. One thing I loved is that Pobitora is not overly crowded. You actually get to feel the peace of the forest and hear the sounds of nature. It’s a perfect weekend getaway for anyone living in or visiting Guwahati.

Great that there's a sanctuary to protect the rhinos, and it's not very crowded. Early morning is the best time to visit. You'll get to see many birds and ofcourse rhinos (100% chance as it's the most densily populated area for rhinos in the world). Avoid the elephantrides as the elephants are not suppose to be used for human entertainment. They should be free in the wild, just like the rhinos! They have feelings too. How would you like it if you were tied up with a chain before and after work and stay in one spot all day?! They even hit the elephants with sticks, this is pure animal abuse. A jeep safari is amazing and can get you close enough to the rhinos. Don't be egoistic and choose the ethical way of a safari!

Amazing sightings of Rhinos and wild buffaloes along with migratory birds. Try for the elephant safari for better sightings because elephants can go very near to the Rhinos unlike jeeps.

Highly recommended for Rhino spotting in the safari, the sanctuary is small when comparing to Kaziranga but the density of Rhinos is high. So the chance of spotting is very high. I spotted just 10ft away.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary » Naparks Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in Assam, India, famous for its high concentration of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros and its status as an Important Bird Area. Located on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra river, it is known for its grasslands and wetlands, similar to Kaziranga National Park, but with a higher density of rhinos. Visitors can experience jeep and elephant safaris, and the winter months (November to February) are ideal for birdwatching.

I went solo. Tkts can be obtained on site.Rs.365 for 1 person + Rs.1800 for hiring entire jeep. If you are patient you will find some other solo travellers and you all can pool in to take a jeep. A jeep seats 6 visitors + the driver-guide + guard (to stop u from disturbing the peace of the forest n the animals). I liked the relaxed pace of seeing the place. The jeep safari driver-guide was very good. He was calm, spoke softly, had good knowledge of the flora and fauna, indulged us and overall made our experience very soothing. The only disappointment was that we did not get to spot as many rhinoceros' as we would have liked to. Though we were told that the day before there had been very many sightings. So I guess it's our luck. But non- the-less, we did spot one rhino at close range. So it was a trip well worth!! Never realised the entire trip would be so easy, peaceful and stress free.
