The Sports Authority of India (SAI) was established in 1984 as a continuation of the legacy of the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, operating under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It is tasked with the dual mandate of fostering sports culture and achieving excellence in sports at both the domestic and international arenas. In a strategic move to enhance its capabilities, SAI integrated with the Society for National Institutes of Physical Education & Sports (SNIPES) in 1987, which included the Netaji Subhash National Institute for Sports (NSNIS) in Patiala and educational institutions in Gwalior and Thiruvananthapuram. However, the Gwalior institute attained autonomous status as a β€œDeemed University” in 1995 and separated from SAI. Presently, SAI is recognized as the premier institution for the promotion of sports and nurturing of elite athletes in India. With a view to promote Games and Sports in North East, the Sports Authority of India had set up its Sub Centre at Guwahati in 1987 under the SAI North East Regional Centre, Imphal.Foundation stone of the SAI Regional Sub Centre, Guwahati was laid by Mrs. Margaret Alva, former Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India in the year 1987. INTRODUCTION In the year January 2013 Sub Centre, Guwahati is upgraded to Regional Centre, Guwahati. Various SAI Promotional Schemes are operative in four North Eastern States, namely Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh & Sikkim which falls under the administrative jurisdiction of this Centre. The Centre is built on 9.3 acres of land having the following facilities.
