Guwahati Railway Station (Station code GHY) is the bustling main rail hub for Assam and the entire Northeast — always lively and an important gateway! The station looks impressive, especially at night with colorful lighting and the grand entrance — feels modern and well-lit. It's one of the cleaner major stations in the region (ongoing redevelopment under Amrit Bharat Scheme is adding nice touches like better lounges and facilities). Platforms are spacious enough, with clear announcements, free WiFi, decent waiting areas, retiring rooms, food stalls (IRCTC and local options available), and basic amenities like clean restrooms and parking. It's understandably crowded as the busiest in the Northeast, so expect hustle during peak times, but security (RPF) is visible and it feels relatively safe. Food can be hit-or-miss — quick bites work, but nothing gourmet. Overall, a solid 4/5 for connectivity and improvements — gets the job done reliably for travelers heading to/from the Northeast.

Guwahati Railway Station serves as the primary gateway to Northeast India, handling a massive volume of trains and passengers daily. Overall Impression: Guwahati Railway Station (GHY) is a bustling A1-category hub in the heart of the city, recognized as India's first ISO-certified station for cleanliness and green practices. It operates fully on solar power and ranks highly among major stations for passenger amenities. Recent inspections highlight its role in managing nearly 49,000 daily passengers with over 200 trains. Facilities and Amenities: The station features seven platforms equipped with lifts, escalators, and overbridges for easy access, plus free WiFi (via RailWire). Waiting rooms are under renovation and there are one waiting area, and two different retiring areas are running by privately owned company. Minimum charge for retiring room is Rs 1500 for 24 hours. The charge for waiting room is Rs 20 for each hour. These are a big steps by India Railway towards privatisation. IRCTC restaurants, snack counters, and clean restrooms are available, with clear signage aiding navigation. A miniature steam engine outside adds a charming touch, though parking is somewhat distant. Cleanliness and MaintenancePlatforms receive regular cleaning, earning praise for vast improvements in hygiene and smooth flooring (watch for slips on platform 1). It's well-decorated, well-lit, and maintained, with alert staff enforcing rules like mask compliance during peak times. Crowds and Accessibility: Expect crowds due to its status as the region's busiest station, connecting remote Northeast areas 24/7. Exits like Paltan Bazar can feel congested, and toilets occasionally draw complaints. It's safer than average with RPF presence, but arrive early. Areas for Improvement: Enquiry staff behavior is sometimes reported as rude, and VIP lanes create minor inequities. Ongoing developments promise further enhancements. This station has transformed impressively into a modern, efficient facility—ideal for travelers exploring Assam and beyond.

Guwahati Railway Station is one of the busiest and most important railway hubs in Northeast India, connecting Assam with the rest of the country. The station is well-organized, clean, and quite modern compared to many others in the region. Platforms are spacious and equipped with digital display boards, escalators, and ample seating arrangements. The station area has good food stalls, restrooms, and a prepaid taxi counter, making travel easier for passengers. Security is maintained with CCTV surveillance and RPF presence throughout. Its location in the heart of the city makes it very convenient for tourists and daily travelers alike. Overall, a well-managed and essential gateway to the Northeast. AC Waiting Room is available on payment per hour basis. Drinking water is available. But Retiring room is under construction so, it is not available now.

Guwahati Junction (GHY) is one of the busiest and most important railway stations in Northeast India. As a frequent rail traveler, I found it generally efficient and well-connected, with a few areas that could be improved. ✅ Pros: Excellent Connectivity: Major trains to Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and other parts of India halt here. A reliable hub for travelers heading across the Northeast. Central Location: Located in the heart of Guwahati near Paltan Bazar—easy access to buses, autos, and cab services right outside. Facilities: Clean platforms, drinking water, multiple food stalls, bookshops, and charging points available. Reserved and unreserved ticket counters are efficiently managed. Digital Boards: Clear and visible digital train information displays on platforms and concourses. Retiring Rooms & Waiting Areas: AC and non-AC retiring rooms are available for passengers with longer stops, as well as ample waiting chair zones. ⚠️ Areas for Improvement: Sanitation: Restrooms are functional but can be cleaner, especially during peak hours. Passenger Assistance: Staff at enquiry counters can be unresponsive or unhelpful at times. Crowd Management: Gets crowded during major train arrivals/departures. Could use better crowd control at entry/exit gates. Approach Road: The Paltan Bazar exit is crowded and not very well organized—some improvement in traffic flow and cleanliness would help. 🛎️ Tips for Train Travelers: Reach at least 30-45 minutes early during rush seasons. Use the IRCTC Retiring Rooms app for booking stay inside the station. Footbridge is long—be ready for a walk if your coach is at the end. If you’re exiting to the city side (Paltan Bazar), book a cab or rickshaw in advance. The food plaza on platform 1 is decent, but avoid rush hour if you’re in a hurry. 🚂 Overall: A solid and reliable station for your railway journey through Assam or the Northeast. Cleanliness could be better, but facilities and connectivity make it dependable for most passengers. With some improvements in restrooms and passenger support, it easily deserves 5 stars.

The Gateway to North East. Though it's located in the city and platforms are less but ambience and crowd management is nice.
