Review: The Chaotic Gateway to the Northeast As the primary entry point to Northeast India, Guwahati Railway Station is a study in contrasts—balancing modern upgrades with the chaotic reality of a high-traffic transit hub. It holds the distinction of being India’s first fully solar-operated railway station, yet the on-ground experience requires some patience. Infrastructure & Amenities: The station’s standout feature is undoubtedly the Executive Lounge on Platform 1. For a reasonable fee, it offers a sanctuary with AC seating, Wi-Fi, and even shower facilities, which is a lifesaver for long-haul travelers. The retiring rooms have also seen recent renovations, offering hotel-like comfort. However, the general waiting halls tell a different story; recent reports from late 2025 highlight issues with maintenance and unauthorized "entry fees" being demanded by staff, so vigilance is advised. Hygiene & Crowd: While the station boasts an ISO certification for cleanliness, maintaining this standard is a struggle due to the sheer volume of footfall. The main platforms (1 and 2) are generally cleaner, but hygiene levels drop significantly in the general waiting areas and outer platforms, with recent user complaints pointing to poor sanitation. Food & Connectivity: For food, the IRCTC Food Plaza near the reservation counter offers a sit-down meal, though reviews on service are mixed. Inside, numerous stalls provide standard rail snacks. Stepping outside, be prepared for aggressive auto-rickshaw touts; it is highly recommended to use app-based cabs or pre-paid counters to avoid harassment. Verdict: Guwahati Station is functional and improving under the Amrit Bharat Scheme, but it is not yet seamless. For the best experience, stick to Platform 1 amenities and book the Executive Lounge if you have a long layover.

If you’re going to Tawang than you must do advance booking from here a day before. It’s having office of almost all travel companies alongside Government road services and you can take buses and taxis for places like Agartala etc. One can take tea, coffee and quick bite here. However toilet and area is filthy.
