Guwahati Railway Station is one of the busiest and most well-connected stations in the Northeast, located right in the center of the city at Paltan Bazaar. The station is fairly clean, well lit, and has good connectivity to autos, Ola/Uber, buses, and nearby hotels. The platforms are spacious and the display boards are easy to understand, which makes navigation simple for travelers. What makes this station convenient is the number of nearby places you can explore within just a few kilometers. Paltan Bazaar is right outside the station, perfect for quick shopping, food, or basic travel essentials. Within a short distance you can visit Nehru Park, Dighalipukhuri Lake, and the Assam State Museum, all great for sightseeing or relaxing if you have a few hours before your train. For shopping lovers, Fancy Bazaar is hardly 10 minutes away and offers everything from clothes to Assamese handicrafts. If you want something spiritual or scenic, the Umananda Temple on the Brahmaputra River and the river cruise point are also easily accessible from here. A little further, around 6–7 km, is the famous Kamakhya Temple, one of the major attractions of Guwahati. Overall, Guwahati Railway Station is a convenient starting point to explore the city. Good connectivity, helpful staff, and lots of activities nearby make it a pleasant experience for travelers.

Guwahati Railway Station is the main gateway to Northeast India, connecting the region with major cities across the country. The station is generally clean, well-organized, and busy throughout the day. It has multiple platforms, waiting halls, food stalls, and basic passenger amenities. Security arrangements are adequate, and staff are helpful during peak hours. Though crowded at times, ongoing upgrades aim to improve comfort, accessibility, and overall travel experience for passengers.

The Good (The Highlights) Green Energy Leader: It is India’s first station to run entirely on solar power, setting a major environmental benchmark. Modern Executive Lounge: For a fee, passengers can access a high-quality AC lounge with Wi-Fi, clean washrooms, and comfortable seating—a relief in the humid climate. Inclusive Facilities: Recent upgrades (late 2025) have introduced Braille signage and sign language guidance to assist differently-abled passengers. Connectivity: As the "Gateway to the Northeast," it provides unparalleled access to all Seven Sister states and major Indian metros. Digital Integration: The station effectively uses LED display boards and QR-code ticketing to speed up the boarding process. The Bad (The Challenges) Security Lapses: Reports consistently highlight that baggage scanners (especially on the Paltan Bazar side) are often unmanned or non-functional, allowing luggage to enter the station without screening. Hygiene & Sanitation: While platforms are swept, common areas and general waiting rooms are frequently plagued by paan (betel nut) stains and foul-smelling washrooms. Equipment Reliability: Escalators and lifts are prone to frequent breakdowns, which is a major hurdle for senior citizens and those with heavy luggage. Overcrowding & Touts: During peak hours, the station becomes chaotic. Outside the gates, passengers often face harassment from aggressive auto-rickshaw drivers and unauthorized porters. Operational Irregularities: Recent passenger complaints (Nov 2025) mention staff charging for waiting hall access without providing official receipts, indicating a lack of transparency in ground-level management.

It is a well-designed and accessible station with ample parking space. The entrance showcases beautiful traditional paintings and models that highlight the culture of North Indian states, adding a unique charm. However, the platforms are not entirely clean, and the station is frequently overcrowded. The waiting rooms are limited in space, so passengers often end up resting along the platforms. Although there are lounges available, they are pay-to-use, which may not be convenient for everyone. The station has several food options, including the affordable 'Jana Ahar' facility, which is a good choice for budget travelers. Additionally, lifts and escalators are available, making movement across platforms easier. Overall, it’s a well-equipped station, but the cleanliness and seating capacity could be improved to enhance the travel experience.
