The memorial was inaugurated on August 15, 2016, by then‑CM Sarbananda Sonowal, marking Assam’s first state-level war memorial . It's dedicated to Assam’s war heroes—from the legendary 1671 Battle of Saraighat to modern conflicts like Kargil, the 1971 naval attack on Karachi, and the 1962 Sino‑Indian War . Positioned right beside the historic Dighalipukhuri pond and opposite the High Court, the memorial features lush gardens and peaceful pathways . Eye-catching elements include a Vijayanta tank, a MiG‑27ML fighter jet (TS‑522), and a P‑20 naval missile, displayed on raised platforms . The centerpiece is a tall central pillar inscribed with names of Assam’s fallen soldiers, accompanied by plaques and 3D reliefs illustrating key battles . A life-size “Amar Jawan” statue, reverse-saluting soldier sculpture, and reproductions of Saraighat-era Ahom warship and Lachit Barphukan’s statue further enhance its gravity . No Entry Fee: Free access, though donations are welcome to help maintain the site . How to reach: Located at Fatick Chandra Rd, Latasil (near Kamakhya Railway Junction, ~3 km); accessible via auto, bus, or walk . Best time: Weekdays, mornings (around 10 AM) or evenings. The Guwahati War Memorial is a poignant and educational tribute to Assam’s defense heroes. It skillfully combines historical storytelling with military displays and a meditative landscape. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a family looking for a quiet outing, or someone seeking a moment of reflection, this memorial offers something meaningful.

It showcases the Vijayanta Tank, a fighter jet, missiles, and a portrayal of the Great Battle of Saraighat. There is also a small museum at the end. There’s no entry fee although you can voluntarily donate.

This place is great for hangouts and war informations, kids and war material lovers would find this place perfect for spending time. Another good thing is that you don't need any ticket for this place, but you might contribute for the construction of this place and the guards/officers might ask you for some contribution in the donation box, but they will definitely not for you for it...

Excellent use of space amidst the busy area! Its a pleasant place to vist and know more about the Indian military. The good thing is that one can read about various battles, dating back to the pre-independence era. Rather than spending hours in a mall, sometimes its better to visit such places which inspires citizens of his civic duties.

The War Memorial is located beside Dighlipukhuri,Guwahati. It is located opposite the Assam Museum. Statues of the great warrior Lachit Borphukan and his army are the main attraction. People can learn about Assam's brief history, culture, Indian army equipment and Indian history there. The war memorial is dedicated to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation. It serves as a powerful tribute to their bravery and selflessness. The place is well maintained and furnished. Museums and artefacts provide a lot of valuable information. I would recommend everyone to visit this place while traveling to Guwahati. This memorial is closed on Tuesdays.
