I recently visited Umananda Temple in Guwahati, and it was a peaceful and unforgettable experience. Located in the middle of the mighty Brahmaputra River, this temple is famously known as the world’s smallest inhabited river island. The scenic ferry ride to Peacock Island itself is a highlight, offering breathtaking river views. Ferries usually operate from Uzan Bazar Ghat between 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with tickets being affordable and easily available. The best time to visit Umananda Temple is during the winter months or early morning for pleasant weather and fewer crowds. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and holds immense spiritual significance. If you’re looking for the best tourist places in Guwahati or unique attractions in Assam, Umananda Temple is a must-visit destination for spirituality, river views, and a serene atmosphere. Highly recommended for travelers and devotees alike.

Umananda Temple is located on Peacock Island that lies on the mighty Brahmaputra River. This serene place of worship is named after and dedicated to Lord Shiva. The name 'Umananda' comes from the two Hindi words, namely 'Uma', which was another name for Lord Shiva’s wife and 'Ananda' which means happiness. In fact, Peacock Island is one of the smallest inhabited island and possibly one of the most beautiful too. The surroundings of the temple and the divine but understated beauty of the island make it a haven for nature lovers. The temple is situated on the top of a hill called Bhasmakala or Bhasmakuta. The island was originally built in 1694 A.D. by King Gadadhar Singha. However, it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1897 and later rebuilt by a wealthy local merchant. The Umananda temple was crafted beautifully by the skilled Assamese workmen. Aside from being a place of worship, The Umananda temple is also a pleasurable exception to the typical places of worship. Devoid of the cacophony of forceful religion, this place has a serene environment which makes you want to sit down for a while and absorb the beauty of the place encircling by Brahmaputra River.

Umananda Temple is located on Peacock Island, nestled in the majestic Brahmaputra River. The island can be reached by a pleasant ferry ride of about 15 minutes operated by Assam Tourism, available at very reasonable rates. After disembarking, one has to climb around 60 steps to reach the temple. As some portions can be wet and slippery, it is advisable to wear comfortable footwear with good grip. Upon reaching the temple and offering darshan at the Shiva pindi, one is rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of Guwahati city and the vast Brahmaputra, dotted with boats moving gracefully on the river. The small island is lush with greenery, especially trees, creating a serene environment filled with fresh air that refreshes and energizes both body and mind. A truly peaceful and spiritually uplifting place to visit.

I recently visited Umananda Temple, and it was a truly peaceful and memorable experience. Situated on Umananda Island right in the middle of the majestic Brahmaputra River, the location itself makes the visit special. The journey begins with a short ferry ride from new Guwahati inland terminal Ghat fancy bazar and the boat ride across the river offers a refreshing view of Guwahati city and the surrounding hills. Once you reach the island, you climb a few steps to reach the temple located on a small hill. The environment feels calm, spiritual, and surrounded by nature. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the place is believed to be extremely sacred and historically significant. According to legend, Lord Shiva meditated here, and the island is also known as Bhasmachal. The temple was originally built by the Ahom king Gadadhar Singha in the 17th century, and though it was damaged during the 1897 earthquake, it has been beautifully restored. Inside the temple, the sanctum and stone carvings showcase amazing traditional craftsmanship. The entire island gives a feeling of peace and positive energy, making it a perfect place for spiritual seekers, nature lovers, and travelers exploring Guwahati. What I loved most: Serene and natural surroundings Beautiful ferry ride experience Peaceful atmosphere away from city noise Scenic views of the Brahmaputra River Clean and well-maintained surroundings Tips for visitors: Visit early in the morning or in the evening for the best experience Government ferry is more affordable Weekdays are less crowded than weekends and festivals Overall, Umananda Temple is a must-visit destination in Guwahati. Whether you are a tourist, devotee, or nature enthusiast, this place offers both spirituality and scenic beauty. I highly recommend visiting and spending some quiet time on the island. 🌿🙏

Umananda Temple is a beautiful and peaceful temple located on Umananda Island in the middle of the Brahmaputra River. The location is unique, and the views of the river and Guwahati city are absolutely stunning. You can reach the temple by public ferry or ropeway, both offering a scenic and enjoyable experience. The ropeway ticket costs ₹100, public ferry charges ₹5, and private boats cost around ₹100. The ropeway ride, in particular, provides breathtaking aerial views. Another great advantage is that the ferry and ropeway also connect you to North Guwahati, where there are many more places to explore. Overall, it’s a great experience with family and friends, combining spirituality, nature, and sightseeing. A must-visit spot in Guwahati.

To reach the temple, you need to take a ferry ride, which takes just about 10 minutes. When I visited, there were two private ferries available,Dolphin and Jolporee.
