A revitalized gem on the riverfront The Mahabahu Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre offers a captivating blend of history, culture, and nature. It successfully transforms the 170-year-old British-era DC bungalow into a serene public space with a museum and stunning views of the Brahmaputra River. Architectural brilliance and cultural richness The restoration of the bungalow is a visual treat, showcasing the original colonial charm in a modern setting. Inside, the well-curated museum highlights Assam's heritage with exhibits on traditional musical instruments, masks from Majuli, and the art of weaving Assam silk. While some visitors note that the exhibit labeling could be more informative, the overall display is both artistic and educational. A riverside escape One of the center's main draws is its tranquil setting and breathtaking views, especially during sunset. The landscaped gardens, tree-lined pathways, and comfortable seating arrangements create an idyllic atmosphere for relaxation. The spacious lawn overlooking the river, sometimes featuring a life-sized chess set, adds to the serene and leisurely vibe. Family-friendly and accessible The center is designed to be accessible to a wide range of visitors. It features a kids' play zone and wheelchair-accessible facilities, including the entrance, parking, and restrooms. The ambiance is peaceful and family-friendly, making it a great destination for a relaxed day out. Dining and visitor experience For refreshments, a Starbucks outlet and a Radisson food outlet are available on the premises. This adds a touch of modern convenience, though some visitors have voiced concerns that the entry fee may be influenced by these commercial establishments. While food is not allowed inside to maintain cleanliness, the on-site options cater to most needs.

Entry Rs. 100. Old Governer bungalow converted into a Museum related to Brahmaputra, on its banks with a view and Assam related info, pics and British setup. In the Attic is a grand collection of Assamese musical instruments. Has ample space outside too, to stroll around. Has Starbucks on the Campus, entry Rs20. Worth the 40min visit. Located on MG road.

This is where the great warrior Lachit Barphukan made a decisive attack on the Mughals and forced them to return….Transforming this bungalow into Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre is a mark of respect for this vast river that nourished the civilisation here for centuries. Located atop Barphukanar Tilla, a small hillock named after the most famous Ahom general Lachit Barphukan, it is the site from where the Ahom forces planned and launched attacks on the Mughal army during the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, which the latter lost. “After the British annexed Assam in 1826 (after the Treaty of Yandaboo), the post of DC was created for Guwahati in 1839. But the city had no appropriate house at that time to accommodate Captain James Matthie, the first DC. “Several sites were surveyed before Barphukanar Tilla on the banks of the Brahmaputra, where cannons used in the Battle of Saraighat lay scattered, was chosen. Post-independence, it continued to be the DC’s bungalow until 2011. Though the exact date of when the bungalow was completed is not known, it is believed to be sometime in the 1850s. A project to convert it into a heritage museum was later taken up under the Brahmaputra Riverfront Development plan. The heritage centre has on display the heritage of boats, an amphitheatre, an exhibition space, a cafeteria etc. The other attractions include a collection of traditional fishing equipment, photographs and artifacts related to the history of Guwahati and river transport. The bungalow has installations depicting the textile designs, ethnic motifs and indigenous musical instruments

The old DC bunglow is pretty, especially in night lights. The Inside is converted to a museum. Compound Should give good sunset views over Brahmaputra, from positioning. But the entry rate to the compound (100rs) is high, due to Star bucks in the compound.

A must visit place if you have extra spare time in guwahati. A heaven for both nature lovers and history nerds. A small in-house library to read about the culture of Assam and also coffee lovers can enjoy a sip at Starbucks.
